‘Read more’ is probably my favourite piece of work-related advice (not that I get asked much).
On that note, I recently decided to re-visit some of the ‘classic’ Data Warehousing texts from way back when.
There is no better place to start than with Bill Inmon.
To quote directly from the first chapter of “Building The Data Warehouse” (4th edition, 2005):
“…the unintegrated operational data is complex and difficult to deal with. This is simply a fact of life. And the task of getting your hands dirty with the process of integration is never pleasant.
To achieve the real benefits of a data warehouse, though, it is necessary to undergo this painful, complex, and time-consuming exercise… it is mandatory that data flowing into the data warehouse be integrated, not merely tossed…into the data warehouse from the operational environment.”
Those that pat themselves on the back for dumping raw data (‘with no regrets’, ugh) into object storage for the users to chew on should take a long hard look at the above.
Think you know better than Bill eh? I doubt it.
