VLDB's Teradata Disaster Recovery (DR) Service
As Teradata and cloud experts, VLDB has developed a cloud-based Teradata Disaster Recovery (DR) service.
This allows existing Teradata users to protect their production Teradata systems from the unforeseen circumstances that would otherwise lead to a loss of the Teradata service to the organisation.
VLDB’s Teradata Disaster Recovery (DR) service is a fully-managed ‘Disaster Recovery-as-a-Service’ (DRaaS) offering.
The Teradata Disaster Recovery (DR) Challenge
Teradata adoption started in the late 1980’s, initially as a complementary reporting/decision support database to offload demand from IBM mainframe platforms.
Early Teradata adopters performed regular backups of their Teradata database, sent the backup files offsite, and hoped they would never need to restore them to the system.
Although the need for Teradata backup/restore was widely understood and adopted, a Teradata DR capability was very much a ‘nice to have’ during the early Teradata adoption era. During the 1990’s and 2000’s Teradata increasingly became used for more than KPI reporting and supported activities such as predictive analytics, tactical queries and operational applications.
As Teradata has become increasingly mission-critical, the need for a Teradata DR capability has moved from a ‘nice to have’ to a ‘must have’.
All of these approaches bring challenges:
- A separate Teradata DR platform must be purchased
- Data centre hosting is required for the Teradata DR platform
- Data must be synchronised between the Teradata production & Teradata DR systems
To date, very few Teradata users have been able to justify a Teradata DR capability, despite their increasing reliance on the Teradata platform.
Teradata DR Service
The Teradata DR service offered by VLDB is enabled by the availability of Teradata via the public cloud. Teradata was launched on the Amazon AWS platform in Q116, with Microsoft Azure to follow.
As of Q316, Teradata DBMS v15.1 is available on AWS for systems with between 1-32 nodes.
Teradata on AWS offers full support for features such as:
- Teradata Tools and Utilities (TTU)
- Teradata Active System Management (TASM)
- Teradata Parallel Transporter (TPT)
- SQL Assistant / Visual Studio
